As sometimes happens with boys who prefer games to sports. Lenny had few friends but lots of ideas. The fact that he still lived at home with his mother led to a certain self restraint for him. Then one morning, his mother passed away peacefully. The doctor noted the cause of death as a heart attack but emphasized there was no sign of suffering. Her heart must have simply run out of beats at the crematorium. A song played to mark the moment and Lenny wiped a tear away from his glasses, then headed back home. Now his home as an orphan, Lenny sat on the couch and opened a well worn encyclopedia bookmarked just a few pages in on subjects that still held interest for him about insects, mammals, explorers. He had first immersed himself in this volume when he rode in the backseat of his mother's car. The magical pairing of illustrations drawn in a way to look lifelike with short exciting prose about the images fascinated him for Lenny. These were lifetime storytelling books that became kindling for his imagination.
