Brora ginger beer bottle. This stoneware bottle once held ginger beer made in Bremner's Lemonade factory in either Brora or Wick. The airated water manufactory in Brora was housed in a yard at the harbor and was first established in 1805 by James Wilson who also operated a similar factory at Wick Wilson sold his business to another Wick man. Robert Bremner, whose son Donald was sent to Brora to operate this branch with bro becoming a resort destination around the turn of the century with its beach golf course, salmon rivers and countryside attractions. Wilson followed by Bremner was capitalizing on an expanding tourist market with a thirst for carbonated drinks. Bremner served local hotels and shops and business boomed. However, in 1914, the world became embroiled in the great war as if this wasn't bad enough for business. The Spanish flu pandemic immediately at the end of the war in 1918, was responsible for the deaths of up to 100 million people worldwide, including 43 year old Donald Bremner, one of six flu victims in the parish. Although his son, William and son-in-law Alexander McLaughlin picked up the reins and tried to continue the business. They were unable to continue to operate the factory as efficiently. It ceased production in 1822.
