Bacteria. Phages often called phages. For short are viruses that specifically infect bacteria. They are incredibly diverse and abundant in our environment. Outnumbering bacteria by an estimated ratio of 10 to 1. These tiny entities invisible to the naked eye play a crucial role in shaping bacterial populations and maintaining the balance of microbial ecosystems to better understand how phages operate. Let's take a closer look at their life cycle. The first stages, attachments specific receptors on their outer shell that enable them to recognize and bind to certain bacterial cells. Once attached, the phage injects its genetic material into the bacterium inside the bacterial cell. The phages genetic material takes control of the host machinery, redirecting it to produce new phage particles. This process is called replication. As the bacterium continues to replicate, it eventually bursts open, releasing numerous phage progeny, ready to infect more bacteria.
