Josephine Dupnik 1891- 1978, the dew phoenix were boston blue bloods who fled stuffy New England society to create a world of their own in Los Altos Hills at a 1000 acre ranch they called Hidden Villa. Josephine was a Whitney, as in the Whitney Museum of American Art in new york and frank's mother, Lizzie was a member of the prominent boot family. His father was gifted artist, frank davinic. They headed to California in 1918 with their two young Children, Elizabeth and Francis eventually settling in Palo Alto. Their third child hope was born that year when frank left to serve in World War One, Bernard, their 4th child was born in 1922. Then in 1923 they discovered hidden villa, which they considered the most important event in their lives. It became a refuge for displaced people, a summer camp for underprivileged youth and a meeting place for human rights organizations. They were guided by a Quaker belief on fundamental human rights and fought racism, prejudice and inequality head on by creating programs and institutions meant to rectify historic wrongs. They founded the progressive Peninsula school in Menlo Park.
