the Colorado River, once the wildest river in the United States, carved one of the most amazing natural sites in the world, the Grand Canyon. Fed by melting snow from the Rocky Mountains and several smaller rivers, the Colorado River is the seventh longest river in America, stretching 1450 miles in length. It runs through the driest part of America and supplies water to cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In addition, it has turned many acres of desert into valuable farmland. In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Reclamation Act, which authorized the reclamation service to investigate and helped develop the arid lands of the West through water development projects. In 1922 Arthur P. Davis, reclamation director and chief engineer, proposed the construction of a dam to be built on the Colorado River at or near Boulder Canyon. With this proposal, he suggested that the cost of construction could be paid back by selling electric power generated by the power plant
