our world has never been so concerned with keeping surfaces sanitized to prevent the spread of germs and viruses. Over the course of a day, we touch screens in the marketplace as well as for our jobs. And unfortunately, even the best efforts and sanitization are not perfect. Our devices are among the dirtiest surfaces we come into contact with on a daily basis. Nearly every square inch has an estimated 25,000 germs. And in a time when we must work to ensure our own safety and that of others, we know that touching these devices put our health at risk countless times every day. What if we didn't need to touch screens to interact with them, either? Touch makes truly touchless user interface for smart screens possible, using our current devices through a software solution requiring no additional hardware. Developed by professors and researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, either touch offers a new way of controlling our devices. Most devices today already come with integrated microphones and speakers that have the capability of broadcasting and receiving signals above the range of human hearing. By accessing this relatively quiet R F range, sound waves could be used for acoustic user interface, and the user can control the device within the ether directly above it. And because the frequency is in a band humans don't use to communicate. No voices air recorded eliminating privacy concerns. Current approaches, like visible and infrared cameras, do offer some ability to control a smart screen but will rapidly drain the battery and have serious privacy concerns. Other approaches, like millimeter waves and ultrasonic, can provide some ability to infer simple gestures but require additional hardware to be added to the smart device. And they do not offer the capability to fully control the device by using our patented approach to zero in on your hand and track it as it moves above the screen. Either Touch offers freedom from the need to make contact with the screen. Your hand becomes the interface control. It works with or without gloves, meaning you won't need to remove your gloves while on the job or during the winter to take a call or respond to a text. Hospitals, restaurants, retail outlets, educational facilities virtually anywhere we interact with one another could take advantage of this technology with a simple software update. Medical professionals can use ether touch to enter patient data without touch maintaining a sterile environment at all times. All point of sale would benefit directly through touchless transactions, allowing customers to sign for goods and services without any physical handling of equipment. Ether touch introduces a truly remarkable new way to control our devices and at the same time make the world a safer place, protecting ourselves and those around us simply by touching the ether.
