Medtronic has impacted millions of lives through more than 70 years of innovation and we aren't stopping there. In fact, we have found a new gear to accelerate our commitment to patients now more than ever. One way we are delivering on that commitment is by simplifying our operating model to sterilize medical devices. Across medtronic sterilization is critical to patient safety. There are currently six methods of sterilization used across Medtronic. Over two thirds of Medtronic products are sterilized with ethylene oxide in small batches or large facilities. Earlier this year, Medtronic created a dedicated team of sterilization experts and engineers to lead three distinct changes. One simplifying how we sterilized with ethylene oxide to reducing our network complexity. Three expanding our menu of safe sterilization alternatives and E, or sterilization cycle is comprised of three phases Across Medtronic we have over 90 different versions of validated E or sterilization cycles. Our global team has redesigned 25 of these cycles into simpler one. Medtronic cycles with up to 45% less ethylene oxide and 50% shorter cycle times. This is reducing complexity by 75% at our strategic locations At the same time, we are also leading partnerships with regulators to implement more efficient approval pathways for these modernizations. This is just one more way we're leveraging our new gear. Medtronic uses more than 54 different ethylene oxide sterilizers across the globe. 80% of E. O. Sterilization is through external partners located outside our manufacturing and distribution networks sending our products to these sterilizers creates long delays in delivering products to our patients. So Medtronic is creating a new simplified network model by adding and expanding sterilizers in our network. Our global team is saving weeks of transit time, producing $50 million in distribution and inventory costs. This means we can deliver safely sterilized products to our patients faster and with higher levels of confidence than ever before. Yeah. Mhm. So Medtronic is taking our original six sterilization methods and adding more to improve our flexibility and design options. Our team of scientists, technologists and sterilization experts are assessing and testing these new technologies on enterprise wide materials and products. Together we are accelerating next generation technologies to meet the needs of next generation of products are new gear is driving us to more nimble and effective solutions for our patients. And while Medtronic is transforming, so is the world around us. In 2019 the no E. T. O. Social political movement brought intensified scrutiny on the use of ethylene oxide driving the closure of large sterilization facilities in the United States, governments and regulators in europe. And the U. S. Proposed legislation to limit the use of E. O. The F. D. A. Announced innovation challenge is to reduce E. O. Emissions and find alternative sterilization technologies as the world transforms. So do we. By working together in more innovative ways across the enterprise. This is one more way mechatronics is using our new gear, delivering on our commitment to our employees and patients. Please visit our SharePoint site to learn more.
