Considered the rarest penguins on earth. The Galapagos penguin is endemic to the Galapagos Islands and it is the only penguin found north of the equator. It has an estimated population size of around 1500 individuals with fewer than 1000 breeding pairs. Population levels are influenced by the effects of the El Nino southern oscillation which reduces the availability of shoaling fish leading to low reproduction or starvation.
