The Power of Voice-Over Narrators in Video Production
In this article
Using a professional voice over when creating promotional videos has great advantages. It can give the video a more humanized feel to it, bringing more attention to the video itself.
Voice over narrators are talented in creating a more natural feel to the video production, narrating the product or service that is in the video for the audience to properly understand what it is. With the proper execution, voice over narrators can be highly successful in the way that it creates an added feature to the video that describes it in a different tone and brings the story to life.
A good example of the power of voice over narrators in video is the television series Planet Earth. David Attenborough was the professional that did the voice-over in the BBC series that featured a global overview of Earth, each episode focusing on a different aspect.
Attenborough tied the whole show together each time, giving an in-depth description of what was happening during the video and explaining to viewers the story of the show. The voice over narration tells the story of what is happening during the video. Without the narration the video would have been lost, nobody what would know what the series was about and the series would not have been a success.
Voice over narration is one of the largest genres of voice talent, therefore it is highly popular, but most people don’t even notice when there is voice over narrators in a video. That’s because the voice-over narrators are professionals, they have been well trained in doing voice-overs to create the feel of storytelling and to give the viewer a whole different aspect to the video.
In The Shawshank Redemption, Morgan Freeman does a voice over that takes the film on a journey of over two decades. There are large jumps in time that, without a voice over, people would have been lost as to what had happened. Without voice over, the film would have had to of been much longer, dragging on.
Carefully constructing the voice-over, The Shawshank Redemption was successful in producing a video with voice over that carried the viewer throughout to tell the story.
Many people will argue that voice-over narrators are just a waste of space in video production because they feel that what is happening in the video doesn’t need to be narrated. Although that can be the case sometimes, there are plenty of examples where voice over narration is of importance.

Great article!
This is what World-Voices Organization is all about. Contrary to much discussion in the biz, it’s not about “certifying” or approving anyone. The idea is the promotion of our “industry” as a whole. That’s what professional industry associations do. That is one of the missions of WoVo. Educating the public about the importance of lending a professional voice appropriate to a video’s content. This is the kind of article voice seekers and those who narrate their own training or marketing content via headset in an echoey office, should read. VO is a profession like any other skilled profession.
This concept really applies to many voice over projects…I feel a business with a professional voice on the recording for on hold or answering machines makes a huge impression on a potential client.
